Harry Potter & the Cursed Child Relationships

Rose & Scorpius

The first time I read Harry Potter & the Cursed Child, I thought that Scorpius had a crush on Rose Weasley-Granger. I am not alone in this. When the book first came out, Hexrpg.com, a Harry Potter roleplaying site I am on, was littered with requests for Rose/Scorpius role-plays.

Albus & Scorpius

The play, when on saw it in January 2022, focused heavily on the romantic relationship between Albus & Scorpius. While this was also not an uncommon interpretation, it’s a bit confusing given my original interpretation of the characters. I will have reread the book before my livestream tonight. So, I’ll hopefully be more prepared to compare and contrast the relationships at that point.

Albus & Delphini

I also thought that Albus had a crush on Delphini, something that she exploited to get Albus to do what she wanted him to do. This is evidenced by his reaction to her kissing him on the cheek at one point in the book and play.

My Current Interpretation

Although I have not reread the book at this current writing, I also cannot unsee the stage version of the play. As I am not a part of the LGBTQ+ community, I can only speculate as to what was happening. Perhaps some of my readers in that community can help me out and let me know if I’m on the right track.

Although the wizarding world is more open to queer individuals, perhaps they do still face some stigma regarding sexuality. Albus and Scorpius were 14 years old during much of the play. They were also still figuring out their sexuality–it’s possible that they were even bisexual–something that I think could be likely in Albus’ case based on the performance at the Curran.

When Albus’s father (Harry Potter) forbids Albus from seeing Scorpius, could this have been, to some degree, out of homophobia? This could also explain why Albus attempted to focus on Delphini, and even why Scorpius, at times, attempts to flirt with Rose–because they feel that they should. That it is expected.

The struggle that Albus went through wasn’t just a struggle between being forbidden to see Scorpius, but trying to come to grips with being forbidden to be attracted to another boy.

I don’t know if I’m right. I could have it entirely wrong. But, it is the only way, at this time, that I can understand the story. Let me know what you think in the comment section and stay tuned for my livestream tonight.
