Feminism Is

According to Merriam Webster dictionary, feminism is: “belief in and advocacy of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes expressed especially through organized activity on behalf of women’s rights and interests”.

I would like to generalize that further to the belief in and advocacy of political, economic, and social equality of all sexes, genders, and sexual orientations because the definition above is NOT intersectional at all.

Feminism is often misunderstood. Feminists are often seen as manhaters, as b****es, as bra-burning, feminazis. I was told once by a boyfriend that women have enough rights. He even posited that women had more rights than men. Sure. We have a right to be raped if we walk alone at night. We have the right to be sexually harassed, talked over, domestically abused, and to just not be taken seriously.

According to RAINN, an American is sexually assaulted every 68 seconds.

The National Sexual Violence Resource Center states that 1 in 5 women have been the victim of attempted or completed rape.

Unlike many conservative arguments, only about 5% of rape allegations are proven false, more than 40% of women have experienced sexual violence of some type, and less than 20% of rapes are reported. https://legaljobs.io/blog/sexual-assault-statistics/

According to the CDC, 1 in 3 women has experienced sexual violence, including unwanted sexual contact. #Me too

Cal Poly Humbolt: Stop Rape: Response & Prevention states that only 2% of rapists are convicted and imprisoned.
