Ed the Excavator: Fun and Educational Story for Future Engineers (Vroomers)

Ed the Excavator: Fun and Educational Story for Future Engineers (Vroomers) is written by Read with You Center for Excellence in STEAM Education. Although I am not interested in excavators, this is a cute story about three kids searching for treasure. But, they need a little help. This is a great way to teach children about excavators. This book gets 5/5 stars from me.

Honesty is Your Strength: An Engaging Children’s Story About the Importance of Honesty and Telling the Truth

Honesty is Your Strength: An Engaging Children’s Story About the Importance of Honesty and Telling the Truth is written by Roxanne Russ and edited by Anastasia Bolshakova.

This book sets the bar high for itself by claiming to be an engaging children’s story, but it falls a little short.

I had a couple of issues with the story. First of all, and this is a minor issue, but I don’t know of anyone who still has garden gnomes. It doesn’t make a huge difference in the rating, because the rest of the story is more or less relatable.

The second issue I had is the resolution of the story. While the kids did finally tell the truth about having broken the garden gnome, their ‘punishment’ was to buy Mia’s mom roses. I’m not a huge proponent of punishment, but buying a bouquet of roses bugs me because it asserts that if you screw up, you should buy the person you hurt flowers.

In this case, mum’s roses were ruined, but the association still bugs me. This concern is somewhat ameliorated by them helping her replant the roses the next day, but I felt like there was a lot left unexplained in the conclusion. It was summarized rather than developed.

This story gets 3.5/5 stars from me.

Good Puppy, Naughty Puppy, Sad Puppy, Happy Puppy

Good Puppy, Naughty Puppy, Sad Puppy, Happy Puppy is written and illustrated by Florence D. Blanding. I really enjoyed this story. It was a heartwarming story about a little boy who was given a puppy for his birthday. The puppy then got lost, and the reader goes on the little boy’s journey to find him. 5/5 stars from me.
